Curriculum Vitae

Lukas Bittorf has studied Chemical Engineering at the TU Dortmund University since 2011. He completed his bachelor thesis with the topic ‘Residence Time Distribution of the continuous Phase in millistructured, stirred pulsed Extraction Columns’ at the Laboratory of Equipment Design. He completed his master at the Laboratory of Thermodynamics with his thesis ‘Modeling the Equilibrium of an Organocatalytic Reaction under High Pressure Conditions’. Since 2018 he works as a research associate at the Laboratory of Equipment Design, participating in the ENPRO-ORCA project. Within the scope of this project he develops a fully automated spinning band column as a module for distillation in modular plants.

Research

In order to reduce the time-to-market, it is of interest to provide a set of modular process equipment for modular plants. With the flexible tools of a modular plant, it is possible to produce a large amount of products with the given set of modules. In the scope of the project ENPRO-ORCA, a continuous Spinning Band Column (SBC) for distillative separation is optimised and automated.

The Spinning Band Column is well known for its low pressure drop and high separation performance, making it a viable choice for laboratory scale. The low pressure drop also gives a good opportunity for vacuum distillation, since the achievable pressure is limited by the pressure in the sump. In addition, it is suitable for a wide range of separation tasks, which is a major requirement for modular plants.

By implementing a Process Logic Controller (PLC) for the controlling tasks, the module is controlled inherent. In consideration of various feed compositions and flows as well as product specifications, it is important to characterise the behaviour of the column for several operation points.
